Chapter Seven

Loud voices woke me up. I sat up alone in our bed, blinking sleep away.

A resounding male voice boomed through the castle walls. "Lord Drekk of Dragonhaeme Fyer, the Watching Dragons seek consent to enter your lands and for mind speak.”

Drekk was missing. I was in our bed, the furnishings restored to their original state. Not knowing what was going on, I rushed to the large window only to gawk at the two gigantic dragons circling in front of our castle.

One was golden-brown and looked as brutal as Drekk in his dragon form. The other was leaner, more streamlined with vicious spikes running from its head to the tip of the tail. It was swamp green and probably lived in a world where the color would make for excellent camouflage.

As I watched, Drekk exited the castle and scrutinized the dragons, hands on hips. He bowed to them. They communicated through mind speak. I could sense it, the hair on my arms and nape standing up at the magic reeking the air.

I wasn’t the only one responding to the magic, though. As I watched wide-eyed, the territory extended in every direction. Mountains soared into the upper atmosphere, lakes became wider, possibly deeper. Trees grew taller. More and more flocks of birds appeared in the sky and the volcano started to spew sooty smoke.

My eyes widened. Maybe this was why dragons lived far apart and only one dragon lived in a Dragonhaeme. Otherwise the land would simply break apart under the burden of so much magic.

Speaking of dragons, the two enormous beasts wheeled and landed in front of Drekk, transforming in a flash into two massively large men. Drekk said something and gestured to the open castle doors. They made their way in.

I wondered who they were to Drekk. Oh well, Drekk would tell me and I trusted that if it was okay for me to meet them, it would happen.

Indeed, I was a bit shaken. Like most people, I had never seen a dragon in my life—and in this week I had laid eyes on three. Awed and wondering at this turn in my life, I sat there staring out the window for a few minutes till my bodily needs recalled me.

In the luxurious bathroom I relieved myself. A gentle waterfall flowed out from a high opening in the wall, with waters that clearly came from a hot spring. I washed quickly and came out slipping on a creamy silk robe. It had hung on the back of a door that opened into a dressing room I hadn’t noticed before.

The dressing room did not have any sign of my old outfit—which was no big loss. Its doors turned out to hold many lovely gowns in delicate silks, gauzy materials, richly embroidered or brocaded material in jewel tones and pastels.

However, these weren't what I was used to. Nor would they be conducive to flying in a dragon’s arms. I spied an outfit quite similar to Drekk’s garb. Slipping on under pants and a breastband, I pulled on black leather pants, a white full-sleeved tunic, boots and belt.
